School leaders shape the professional growth of the teachers that they manage and it is vital that they feel confident in helping staff in their professional development.

However, the skills required for these positions vary from the expertise needed to be successful when teaching a class. When teachers move into management positions, such as being the head of a department, parts of their job will involve tasks which they might not be used to undertaking, such as having difficult conversations with employees that they are managing. This can be particularly hard if they are now in a more senior position than faculty members who used to be co-workers.
